Nigerian Police Vow To Quell Threats Ahead Of May 30 ‘Biafra Day’ Celebrations In Anambra, Intensify Security

In a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, the police said they have made strategic deployments across the state, especially in areas identified as potential flashpoints.

The Anambra State Police Command has assured residents of heightened security and swift action against any threats to peace and public safety, as tensions mount ahead of the planned “Biafra Day” celebration on Friday, May 30, 2025.

In a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, the police said they have made strategic deployments across the state, especially in areas identified as potential flashpoints.

These include major junctions and towns such as Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Ihiala, Oraifite, and surrounding communities.

The proactive move comes in response to threats issued by separatist groups calling for the observance of Biafra Day, an action the police have labeled “illegal” and orchestrated by “criminal elements.”

“Police-led Joint Security Force comprising the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other security agencies, including the Army and Navy, have intensified patrols and taken control of strategic locations,” said SP Ikenga.

Schools in various parts of Anambra have already declared Friday a lecture-free day as a precautionary measure, following reports of intimidation from separatist sympathisers.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, held a closed-door meeting with heads of security outfits in the state to finalise operational strategies. According to the police spokesperson, the joint security team is “fired up and very motivated to confront any security challenges head-on.”

SP Ikenga emphasised that the collaborative efforts between security agencies and residents had bolstered the confidence and morale of operatives on the ground.

“The heightened presence of security personnel aims to deter criminal activities, reassure the public, and ensure a safe environment for citizens and visitors alike,” Ikenga added.

He also praised the people of Anambra, referred to as Ndi Anambra, for their support and for joining voices in condemning any actions that threaten national peace and unity.

To enhance public cooperation, the police command has released hotlines of divisional heads across the state, urging residents to report any suspicious movements or breaches of peace in their areas.
