Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, has raised fresh concerns over the persistent non-payment of government contractors, warning that the inaction threatens to erode confidence in the National Assembly and stall critical development projects across the country.
Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, Moro expressed frustration over the Ministry of Finance’s failure to meet financial obligations, despite the availability of appropriated funds.
“Unless we take it very seriously with the Ministry of Finance, this parliament will become an embarrassment itself. Even those who have funds to commit to projects will be very unwilling to commit their money to these projects because they fear they will not be paid,” Moro said.
The Benue South senator noted that the uncertainty surrounding payments has left contractors demoralized and skeptical about engaging in future government projects, further compounding the country’s infrastructure deficit.
He called on the Senate to summon top officials of the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General to give a detailed explanation on the status of capital releases and outstanding liabilities since October 2024.
Moro’s comments echo similar warnings by other lawmakers, including Senator Abdul Ningi, as pressure mounts on the executive to address what many now describe as a looming fiscal credibility crisis.
