President Bola Tinubu allegedly supported the House’s decision to impeach former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and elect Mojisola Meranda as his replacement, bringing a temporary conclusion to the issue in the Lagos State House of Assembly. According to Vanguard News, this comes after a group from the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) could not succeed in meeting with Tinubu in Abuja to address the issue.
In an effort to end the leadership dilemma, the GAC called an emergency meeting of the Lagos State House of Assembly, but no one came up with a solution. After the fact, the harm had already been done, despite the MPs’ written apologies for not including the party leadership in the expulsion of Obasa.
As a result of the situation, tensions had begun to rise between the GAC and the APC in the state, with some individuals advocating measures that would bring disrepute to the legislature and undermine the party’s prospects in the upcoming elections.
But Thursday, with Meranda at the helm, the House is anticipated to start sitting, thanks to Tinubu’s acceptance of the judgement.
After hearing demands for Meranda to quit as speaker and alternatives to reinstate Obasa or commute his impeachment to resignation, the parliamentarians ultimately decided against it.
On the contrary, they rallied around Meranda, adamant that the legislative branch could not do its job properly unless they were given autonomy. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who had been trying to mediate a peaceful resolution, has taken some solace in the latest development.
After weeks of being sidetracked by the crisis, the governor is once again free to attend to critical and pressing state problems. In the meantime, APC chieftain Fouad Oki has cautioned parties to proceed with care when resolving the situation and has urged lawmakers to exercise the autonomy they rightfully deserve.
According to Oki, public opinion and community support are major factors in determining political decisions, and the Lagos legislature’s decision has received a lot of support from many parts of society.
In a letter to Tinubu, another party faithful named Dr. Segun Awosanya has urged him to think about what staying in the dispute could mean. According to Awosanya, the Lagos State House of Assembly has a long history of being lauded for its independence and effective self-governance, but this honour is in jeopardy due to recent developments Read More>>
