According to vanguard, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, the Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, has announced his intention to run in the upcoming Anambra governorship election, scheduled for November 8. Okonkwo made the declaration on Friday during a brief ceremony held at his country home in Ire village, Ogidi, in the Idemili North Local Government Area.The business mogul, who plans to contest on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also unveiled his provisional campaign council as he prepares for the party’s primary election.

In his speech, Okonkwo emphasized that his decision to run was motivated by a deep sense of responsibility and a desire to contribute to Anambra’s growth. He based his decision on extensive consultations with stakeholders and personal reflection.

Describing Anambra as a land of boundless potential, with industrious entrepreneurs and resilient people, Okonkwo acknowledged that the state had yet to fully realize its promise due to poor governance. He cited the widespread insecurity and the associated fear that has crippled the state, preventing progress.

“The pains and horrors of insecurity have left our people living in the bondage of fear. People earnestly cry for real security and progress,” Okonkwo said, before reaffirming his commitment to the state’s future. He stressed that Anambra deserves the best leadership, promising to foster a state where governance is about service to the people, not personal gain. Okonkwo outlined his key priorities, which include security, economic transformation, job creation, infrastructure development, education, human capital development, agriculture, technology, skills acquisition, and value reorientation.

His candidacy, he said, represents a movement to break Anambra free from stagnation and put it on the path to sustainable development. “I cannot do it alone. I need your support; together, we can make Anambra a shining example of excellence and good governance,” he said.

Okonkwo reiterated that his focus would be on improving the welfare of the people, especially the youth, women, and vulnerable populations. He also emphasized that a thriving society cannot exist without security and accountable leadership. To address this, he promised to collaborate with security agencies, invest in community policing, and ensure government efficiency.

In closing, Okonkwo reiterated his commitment to this vision, declaring that he would pursue it on the APC platform for the collective good of Anambra’s future.
