No fewer than 32 cows were killed by lightning during a heavy downpour in Osara, Obantoko area of Odeda Local Government Area, Ogun State, on Saturday.
The bizarre incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. during a thunderstorm, causing panic among local residents and Fulani herders in the area.
The Baale of Osara, Chief Wasiu Afolabi, who confirmed the development on Sunday, said he was informed of the incident by the Fulani herders responsible for the cattle.
“I was at home when the Fulani herders came to inform me that lightning had struck and killed 32 cows. I visited the scene and saw the carcasses where they were kept before grazing,” he told reporters.
Afolabi added that the matter had been reported to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Aregbe Police Division and the Chairman of Odeda Local Government Area, Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo.
He noted that a community meeting had been scheduled with the herders to discuss next steps and ensure the incident does not disrupt the peace of the area.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, also confirmed the incident in a statement sent to journalists via WhatsApp.
“The command is aware. The incident was reported to the DPO, Aregbe Division, at about 13:30hrs on Saturday, June 21, 2025. He led a team to the scene where 32 cows were found dead, struck by lightning during the heavy rain,” Ogunlowo said.
Local authorities have assured residents that the situation is under control and there is no threat to public health or safety.
