OPINION: On Africa’s Obsession With Porn And Sports Betting

I am one of the few Africans who has travelled to every corner of Africa. My findings from my globetrotting are that with the probable exception of Morocco and the White suburbs of South Africa, you can find an African town without schools, libraries, gardens, parks, and hospitals.

But you can’t find African towns without churches, mosques, brothels, and, recently, sports betting parlours. We are such a religious people, but our societal morals are in sharp and stark decline. What, then, is the essence of our religion beyond religiosity?

Recently, the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Soludo, revealed that seventy-seven communities in his state do not have schools. I was able to send someone to ten of those communities, and won’t you know it! They had churches—all of them. They also had beer parlours where Hero beer was sold in close proximity to sports betting centres.

In Africa, you often find architecturally breathtaking churches and mosques within the vicinity of indecorously and inexorably dilapidated schools. And members of that community will continue to unite to fund the religious edifice and the men inside rather than the educational offices and the teachers and pupils within.

Take Nigeria for example. One of the most religious, if not the most religious nations on Earth. Yet, available data shows that the sites where Nigerians spend the most money annually are porn sites and sports betting apps.

If you take time spent on the site Porn Hub per capita, South Africa has the second highest quota per person. And if you want to trend in sub-Saharan Africa on X, formerly Twitter, just post a booty-shaking video. Am I lying?

And the thing is that Africans do not own these porn sites and sports betting apps that target Africans. Sadly, European football is the main focus of sports betting in Africa, with billions of dollars leaving Africa every week via porn and gambling.

Porn Hub is the sixteenth most visited website worldwide, but in Africa, it is in the top ten. And it is Canadian-owned and based. Sportybet is owned by Sudeep Dalamal Ramnan, who uses the famed Nigerian football hero, Nwankwo Kanu, as the face of the brand. In other words, you look at an African hero but pay an Indian Nero who is based in England.

The greatest insult I ever received in my life, besides the one from Obidients, was when I asked the government to ban sports betting apps. BATists, PDP, Kwankwasiyya, and Obidients, united to insult me and my generation that day.

Nigerians cannot hardly unite for Nigeria. But we are united for sports betting.

Yet, we are a religious people whose faiths frown on such practices.Tap Here To Read Full Details
