The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwanda Olufemi, has warned vigilante groups, hunters’ associations, and anti-cult groups against jungle justice, urging them to operate within the dictates of the law.
Olufemi specifically warned that the conduct of some vigilantes who killed 16 northern hunters in Uromi, Edo State, should not be repeated in Delta State.
He gave the charge during a town hall meeting with security stakeholders on Saturday in Asaba, as part of activities marking National Police Day.
The police boss also advocated intelligence gathering and the provision of timely information to the police by local security operatives.
“Don’t take action like the vigilante in Edo State. Information is very critical and sensitive; that’s why you don’t share it anyhow, because we have betrayers in our midst. Don’t take decisions that are capable of embarrassing this command. If the vigilante group in Edo State had informed the police, the incident would have been averted,” he stated.
Olufemi urged the security volunteers to always conduct themselves properly, warning them against oppressing members of the public.
