According to Metro, Brentford has made Premier League history by becoming the first team to score in the opening minute of three consecutive matches.
The Bees took a 1-0 lead against West Ham on Saturday after just 38 seconds, with Bryan Mbeumo finding the net at the Gtech Community Stadium.
This followed Mbeumo’s earlier goal just 23 seconds into their previous match against Tottenham a week prior.
Additionally, Brentford took an early advantage against Manchester City on September 14, with Yoane Wissa scoring just 22 seconds into that match. After Brentford set the record for the fastest goals in consecutive Premier League games against Spurs and City, manager Thomas Frank stated, “We work on it. No doubt about it. We have a clear plan for it. Obviously, we know it’s difficult to score every single time from a kick-off. We have players around where the ball drops, and then we play from there, and maybe teams are not ready. We were definitely ready; I think that’s the most important thing.”
Frank elaborated to VAVEL, “First and foremost, it is not a coincidence. It’s not like we just roll it back and kick it forward. We maybe roll it back and maybe kick it forward, or maybe we do something, but there are clear roles for everyone involved.”
Brentford’s set-piece coach, Keith Andrews, is credited as the strategist behind the club’s recent success in scoring early in Premier League matches. While elements of luck, such as winning the toss and favorable play, contribute, manager Thomas Frank confirmed that extensive hard work in training is also a significant factor.
In terms of records, the fastest goal in Premier League history belongs to Shane Long, who scored after just 7.69 seconds for Southampton against Watford on April 23, 2019, during the 2018-19 season. The second-fastest goal was netted by Philip Billing for AFC Bournemouth against Arsenal in the 2022-23 season, coming in at 9.11 seconds.
