With 910 days remaining until Nigeria’s next presidential election on February 20, 2027, political maneuvers are already gaining momentum across the country.

Although President Bola Tinubu, who succeeded former President Muhammadu Buhari just 15 months ago, is still early into his first term, underground consultations and alignments are taking shape, particularly among political leaders from the northern part of Nigeria.

Key opposition figures are reportedly exploring the possibility of forming a strong coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election.

These efforts are being driven by dissatisfaction with Tinubu’s performance since he took office on May 29, 2023, with critics accusing him of exacerbating economic hardship for Nigerians.

In recent days, speculation has circulated regarding potential ticket pairings for the 2027 race.

One rumored pairing is that of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.

However, Ganduje quickly dismissed these claims, asserting that they were unfounded attempts to create discord between himself and Tinubu.

According to Vanguard, northern power brokers, meanwhile, are said to be searching for a southern candidate who would serve only one term before passing the baton to the North, in line with Nigeria’s power rotation principle.

After Tinubu’s expected four-year tenure, some argue that the South would need another four years to balance out Buhari’s eight-year presidency.
