The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has a new Commissioner of Police, Peter Opara, following approval by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Opara replaces CP Benneth Igwe, recently promoted to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) and posted to Zone 7, Abuja, as the Zonal AIG.

The appointment was confirmed on Saturday, September 14, in a statement by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations at the PSC.

“CP Opara’s wealth of experience will be instrumental in maintaining peace and security in the nation’s capital,” Ani said.

Before his new role, CP Opara was the Commissioner of Police at the Force Secretary’s Office. He also served as the Deputy Commissioner of Administration and Finance for Imo State Command. He held several key positions, including Personal Assistant to the former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, IGP Mike Okiro (Rtd).

Opara has also served as DCP at the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano, as Area Commander in Aba and Uyo, and as Senior Deputy Defence Adviser at Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

In addition to Opara’s posting, the PSC has also approved replacing CP Miller Gagere Dantawaye with CP Festus Eribo as the new Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State.

Eribo, a law graduate from the University of Calabar, has held various roles, including Area Commander in Lagos and Deputy Commissioner Operations in Kogi State. He was also the Commissioner of Police in Taraba State.

The commission previously approved postings for the Commissioners of Police in Abia, Lagos, and Ebonyi states.
