Political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has launched a scathing critique of supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing them of political immaturity, selective criticism, and emotional bias.
In a post titled “The Contradictions It Takes to Be an Obidient”, Omokri claimed that Obi’s followers—popularly known as “Obidients”—exhibit what he described as “double standards” in their expectations of political figures and public discourse.
“They want Peter Obi to attack Tinubu but don’t want anyone to criticize Obi,” Omokri wrote, citing instances where, according to him, the former Anambra governor’s supporters permitted him political flexibility that they would harshly deny others.
Omokri further questioned Obi’s shifting political alliances, particularly his recent reported alignment with Nasir El-Rufai, whom Obi had previously criticized, and his controversial appointments of campaign coordinators in regions outside their cultural and religious affiliations.
He also criticized what he perceives as religious selectivity, alleging that while Obi could appeal to Christian audiences during the campaign, his supporters reacted strongly when his religious identity was discussed by others.
“These are the contradictions it takes to be an Obidient in Peter Obi’s cult,” Omokri concluded, sparking renewed debate online about political tribalism and the state of Nigeria’s opposition politics.
