Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has claimed that he and Senator Ben Murray-Bruce were instrumental in the selection of Peter Obi as the vice-presidential candidate to Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 general elections.
Omokri made the revelation in a recent interview, where he recounted behind-the-scenes political maneuvers that led to Obi’s nomination and enhanced international profile.
“I and Senator Ben Bruce were responsible for Atiku picking Peter Obi as his running mate in 2019,” Omokri stated.
“We packaged Peter Obi. When Peter Obi met Boris Johnson, it wasn’t by his effort — I personally took him to Boris Johnson, alongside Ben Bruce. He cannot deny it.”
The former presidential aide suggested that Obi’s image, especially in the international diplomatic space, was carefully curated as part of the campaign strategy of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the time.
Omokri’s comments come amid ongoing political tensions and alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as former allies trade barbs and reposition for influence within Nigeria’s shifting political landscape.
Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was the running mate to Atiku Abubakar under the PDP in the 2019 presidential election before eventually contesting in 2023 under the Labour Party.
