The House of Representatives has launched an inquiry into the non-delivery of 2,000 tractors, implements, and 100 combined harvesters under the Presidential Food Security Initiative and the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Drive, as reported reported by ARISE NEWS.
This development comes as part of President Bola Tinubu’s push to revamp Nigeria’s agricultural sector and ensure food security.
During a session on Tuesday, the House mandated its Committee on Agricultural Production and Services to investigate the delays in implementing agreements tied to the initiative.
The committee is also tasked with examining the status of proposed tractor assembly plants included in the agreements.
The probe follows reports of significant delays in fulfilling commitments under the scheme, which is designed to provide modern agricultural equipment to farmers and bolster food production across the country.
Lawmakers expressed concerns over the potential impact of these delays on the broader goals of achieving food sufficiency and reducing agricultural imports.
Speaking on the matter, a member of the House, who sponsored the motion, emphasized the need for accountability.
“The Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Drive is a critical component of the administration’s strategy to boost agricultural productivity and create jobs.”
“Delays in the delivery of equipment undermine these objectives and raise questions about the management of the initiative,” he stated.
The House also directed the committee to inquire into the nature of the agreements, the timeline for implementation, and the reasons behind the non-delivery of the equipment.
The findings from the investigation are expected to inform future decisions on agricultural reforms and the allocation of resources.
