Senator Abdul Ningi has raised alarm over what he described as arbitrary project financing by the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, lamenting that contractors have not been paid since October 2024.
Speaking on Tuesday at the red-chamber, the lawmaker expressed concern that key government agencies appear to be “picking and choosing” which projects to fund, a development he said undermines transparency, due process, and the national budget.
“You begin to hear rumors that the Minister of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General are picking and choosing projects they will finance; this is not right,” Ningi stated.
The senator warned that such practices create a distorted execution of the national budget and discourage contractors, many of whom have completed projects or are owed for ongoing works.
He urged the relevant authorities to address the growing backlog of unpaid obligations and restore credibility to public financial management, adding that selective disbursement violates the spirit of equity and national development.
