It is important to recall the tragic event that took place in Ibadan on Wednesday, where a stampede at a children’s fun fair resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children, with many others sustaining critical injuries. Additionally, a stampede in the Okija community of Anambra State on Saturday claimed the lives of no fewer than 20 residents during a rice distribution event aimed at assisting the less fortunate.
Furthermore, reports from DAILY POST indicated that an unspecified number of individuals lost their lives in a stampede during the distribution of rice and other food items at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Maitama area of Abuja on Saturday.
The IGP underscored the risks to public safety associated with uncoordinated distributions of palliatives and events organized by various groups, individuals, and NGOs. He highlighted that such poorly organized gatherings could lead to stampedes and other dangerous incidents that threaten lives.
In response to these occurrences, the IGP directed the commissioners of police in the affected states to conduct comprehensive investigations into the incidents to facilitate appropriate legal actions.
