Suspended KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Major-General Lesetja Senona is set to return to the witness stand at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry tomorrow.
His appearance comes amid renewed scrutiny over allegations of corruption, interference in investigations, and his alleged involvement in the disappearance of cocaine valued at about R200 million.
At the centre of the inquiry is the theft of 541kg of cocaine seized at Durban Harbour in 2021. The drugs were reportedly moved to a Hawks strongroom in Port Shepstone under Senona’s authorisation before the entire consignment disappeared months later, with evidence suggesting the incident may have been an inside job.
The commission has heard testimony that Senona approved storage of the drugs despite security failures, including no CCTV cameras and faulty alarm systems. He is also accused of holding both sets of keys to the strongroom safe, allegedly sharing confidential information with Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and intimidating investigators probing organised crime networks.
Senona’s earlier testimony was marked by tense exchanges, with commissioners criticising him for being evasive and failing to provide clear answers. His previous appearance saw concerns flagged in an interim report, while tomorrow’s session is expected to focus on unanswered questions around the cocaine theft and alleged interference in investigations.
