As rumors of a rift between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima continue to circulate, former Senator Shehu Sani has weighed in, condemning attempts to pit the two leaders against each other.
In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the former Kaduna Central lawmaker criticized those allegedly fueling the speculation, likening it to similar efforts made during the Buhari-Osinbajo era.
According to Shehu Sani, such narratives are not new in Nigeria’s political history and are often aimed at creating division rather than fostering national development.
“Some people just want to see a fight between the President and the VP as they wanted PMB and Osinbajo to fight,” Sani wrote.
“The last time such a fight happened was between Obj and Atiku and it ended in a draw; Atiku annihilated third term and Obj frustrated the Presidential dream of the Waziri.”
His comment refers to the widely reported fallout between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his then Vice President Atiku Abubakar during the early 2000s — a political standoff that reshaped Nigeria’s democratic trajectory.
Sani’s remarks suggest that some individuals or interest groups may be intentionally stirring political tension for ulterior motives, even when no substantial evidence of conflict exists.
As of press time, neither the Presidency nor the office of the Vice President has issued any statement confirming or denying the rumored rift.
Political analysts believe the current administration should remain focused on governance and national cohesion, rather than being distracted by manufactured controversies.
