A tragic journey turned deadly on Friday night as suspected youths in Mangun Village, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, ambushed an 18-seater commercial bus, killing seven passengers and injuring several others in a brutal attack.
According to security sources who spoke with conflict analyst Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred at approximately 9:47 p.m. on June 20, as the bus was traveling from Zaria en route Qua’an-Pan, with 28 passengers on board—most of whom were Muslims traveling to attend a wedding ceremony.
Eyewitnesses recount that the bus was suddenly intercepted near the outskirts of Mangun. The attackers, believed to be local youths, launched a violent assault, killing seven passengers on the spot. One victim remains in critical condition, while six others sustained injuries.
In a grim escalation, the assailants reportedly set the bus ablaze, leaving behind only charred metal and the haunting silence of loss.
Amid the chaos, local leaders from the community intervened to rescue 14 unharmed passengers, a gesture that may have prevented an even larger massacre. The injured were quickly evacuated to the General Hospital in Mangu, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Survivors remain deeply shaken, many still struggling to comprehend how a celebration-bound journey ended in unimaginable horror.
The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the deployment of tactical units to Mangun Village, with a manhunt now underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Authorities are calling for calm as investigations continue, and appeals have been made for peace and restraint amid rising ethnic and religious tensions in the region.
