Tragedy struck in Bazabe Quarters, Albasu Local Government Area of Kano State, as two men died after falling into a pit toilet during a failed attempt to retrieve a mobile phone.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident, which occurred on Saturday, in a statement issued on Sunday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the agency received an emergency call at about 11:16 a.m. from one Inspector Auwalu, alerting them that two persons had fallen into a toilet pit.
“The Fire Service team from Takai Local Government Area was promptly mobilised to the scene,” the statement read.
It was gathered that the first victim, one Usman Muhd, aged 40, dropped his mobile phone—popularly referred to as Indon Kauye—into the pit toilet and entered to retrieve it but became trapped and unresponsive.
In a bid to rescue him, another man, Ibrahim Inuwa, also aged around 40, descended into the pit. He reportedly managed to secure a rope around Muhd in an attempt to pull him out but also lost consciousness inside the toilet.
“Our men arrived the scene and successfully brought both victims out. Unfortunately, they were both unconscious and later confirmed dead,” the statement said.
The bodies have since been handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Albasu Division, CSP Kabiru Magawata, for further investigation.
The fire service has advised the public to always seek professional assistance in emergency situations and avoid entering dangerous enclosures.
