Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general election, has spoken out against the rising tribal and religious divisions among Nigerians, particularly in the diaspora.
His statement comes in the wake of a recent controversy involving a Nigerian woman in Canada who made derogatory remarks against her fellow Nigerians.
“I have received a barrage of reactions,” Obi stated, referencing the widespread backlash that followed his condemnation of the woman’s comments.
He noted that some individuals attempted to justify her actions, claiming they were a response to earlier hateful remarks directed at Nigerians of Igbo ethnicity.
Obi swiftly condemned these earlier remarks as well, stressing that such divisive behaviour has no place among Nigerians.
Obi reiterated his stance against any form of tribal or religious division, stating, “Tribal tension and religious division must not be allowed to grow among us.”
He emphasized the need for unity and collective focus on addressing the significant challenges facing the nation, including insecurity, the high cost of living, and leadership failures.
The former governor of Anambra State called on all Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to reject divisive rhetoric and work towards building a united and peaceful nation.
