These networks, entrenched over the years, are reported to have connections to notorious bandit leaders and criminal actors destabilizing the area.
Recent allegations link the operations of cattle rustlers in Shinkafi to associates of Kachalla Mai Dan Kinni, a notorious bandit leader. His foot soldiers are accused of carrying out violent acts, including the reported shooting of Bako Wurgi, a trusted ally of another infamous bandit leader, Turji. The shooting, which allegedly occurred in Galadi, ultimately led to Wurgi’s capture at a forest clinic near Shinkafi.
Further claims suggest that Sarkin Kara (a cattle market head) of Shinkafi, alongside his former secretary, Samaila Mamman, has played a role in facilitating the operations of these criminal syndicates. The accusations include aiding and abetting the sale and laundering of cattle rustled by bandits, thereby fueling the cycle of violence in the region.
The Zamfara State Government has reportedly shut down several cattle markets in the western part of Shinkafi in an effort to curb the trade of stolen livestock and disrupt the financial lifeline of bandit groups. This move is seen as part of a broader strategy to dismantle the economic infrastructure supporting banditry in the state.
There are widespread calls for security agencies to expedite the arrest of Bako Shanawa, the former Sarkin Kara of Shinkafi, and his secretary, Samaila Mamman. Both men are accused of long standing involvement in criminal activities, including collaborating with bandits and profiting from their stolen wealth.
The allegations extend beyond Zamfara, implicating criminal networks across eastern Sokoto and parts of Zamfara.
