USAID and Corruption: A Persistent Challenge in Foreign Aid and Why Africa Must Do Away With Dependence on Foreign Aid.

USAID and Corruption: A Persistent Challenge in Foreign Aid and Why Africa Must Do Away With Dependence on Foreign Aid.

Since the inauguration of Trump on January 20th, 2025, He mandated Elon Musk DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) to go after wastage of resources in the US government to bring down the ballooning debt that was at $34 trillion, owing to years of deficit budgets.

Elon came to Washington with a young group of 20+ year olds and many thought that he was joking, not knowing that these 20+ year olds were magicians with a computer and could find anything in cyberspace.

Elon asked how the 400+ US government Departments and Agencies were being funded, and everyone said the “Treasury System”. And it was where Elon went to.

If you know Elon well, you did know that both at Tesla and SpaceX, his mantra is always, “where there is wastage, always follow the money to see who is profiting” – and often, it turns out someone is profiting from a wastage and would not like to see such wastage end.

It was this belief that he took to DOGE to understand why US debt kept increasing and nobody in government was concerned enough to investigate.

Elon and his band of 20+ year olds have now uncovered the corruption at The United States Agency for International Development (USAID). UDSAID is one of the world’s largest providers of foreign aid, and its mandate was funding projects in developing countries to promote economic development, humanitarian assistance, and democratic governance.

However, despite this noble mission to foster global progress, Personnel at the USAID (as Elon discovered) have used US taxpayer funds to get involved in the political affairs of recipient countries and determine who should be President and who should not.

This alone should be a major reason for Africans to wean away from dependency on foreign aid.

For instance, one notable example of USAID corruption of political activities in a country, involved USAID’s aid to Afghanistan, where $21 billion were allocated for reconstruction projects via the USAID in the country.

Reports from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) revealed significant corruption, including instances where funds were used to pay ghost employees, fraudulent contractors, and unnecessary projects.

Some programs were so poorly executed that they failed to provide tangible benefits to Afghan citizens, raising questions about accountability and transparency.

In essence, $21 billion was used for – 7,000 ghost schools, where non-existent teachers were collecting salaries, the Kandahar Power Plant Failure ($335 Million) that was supposed to provide 24-hour electricity to the whole of Kabul, the Afghan Capital, and The Afghan Banking Scandal ($850 Million Lost) among others – rather than helping the poor in Afghanistan.

Another example, In Haiti, following the 2010 earthquake, the US government under Barack Obama used the USAID to commit $4 billion to reconstruction efforts in Haiti. Guess the lead private partner on this? The Clinton Foundation!

Investigations found that a significant portion of these funds (about 70%) went through the Clinton Foundation to U.S.-based firms rather than local Haitian organizations and thereby limiting the long-term impact of aid efforts.

Some projects were abandoned midway due to poor planning and mismanagement, while others were plagued by overbilling and inflated costs. Perhaps that is how Obama got his millions to buy million-dollar properties in Hawaii.Tap Here To Read Full Details
