We Don’t Care If You Have a Tinted Permit For Your Vehicle, We Will Arrest You — FCT Police Warn Residents

Motorists driving tinted vehicles in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been put on notice as the FCT Police Command says possession of a tinted permit will no longer shield offenders from arrest.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, issued the warning as the command intensified enforcement of regulations on tinted vehicles, a move aimed at tackling crimes such as kidnappings, armed robbery, drug trafficking and other criminal activities in Abuja.

Speaking in a video shared by the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, Sanusi declared that all tinted vehicles would be subjected to scrutiny regardless of whether their owners possess permits.

“There is a total ban on the usage of tinted vehicles. We’re not looking at whether you have a tinted permit or you don’t have a tinted permit. Whether you have permit or not, if we get to you with your tinted vehicle, we will arrest you,” he said.

According to the police chief, criminals frequently exploit heavily tinted vehicles to conceal their identities and operations, making it difficult for security agencies and members of the public to detect suspicious activities.

Sanusi stressed that permit holders would not be exempted from investigations, noting that the command would verify both the authenticity of permits and whether applicants genuinely qualified for them.

“Even if you show us that you have permit, we will investigate you whether you even qualify in the first place to have applied for that permit,” he stated.

He also dismissed claims that medical conditions automatically justify the use of tinted vehicles, insisting that motorists must provide verifiable evidence from recognised medical institutions.

The commissioner, however, distinguished factory-fitted tinted glasses from deeply darkened aftermarket modifications, saying many factory-installed tints still allow visibility into vehicles.
