Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of local residents collaborating with criminal elements from outside the state to carry out kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Speaking at the 2026 Ministers’ Conference organised by the Edo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Benin City, the governor alleged that some individuals within the state are acting as facilitators for criminal gangs, helping to identify targets and coordinate kidnap-for-ransom operations.

According to him, victims are often handed over to armed groups operating from forest hideouts after being lured or tracked by local collaborators.

Governor Alleges Local Involvement in Kidnap Operations

Okpebholo said the involvement of residents in criminal activities poses a significant challenge to ongoing efforts to improve security across the state.

He warned that the government would continue to pursue criminal networks and their accomplices, regardless of their status or connections.

The governor stressed that security agencies have been directed to intensify surveillance and crack down on individuals aiding criminal groups.

Warning to Religious Leaders

The governor also appealed to religious leaders to avoid intervening on behalf of suspects arrested for criminal offences.

According to him, anyone found guilty of kidnapping, armed robbery, or related crimes will face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Bishop Abioye Calls for Integrity Among Clergy

Also speaking at the conference, respected cleric Bishop David Abioye urged ministers of the Gospel to maintain high moral standards and remain committed to lives of holiness and integrity.

He emphasised the importance of ethical leadership and warned against conduct capable of undermining public trust in religious institutions.

Why This Matters

Kidnapping remains one of the most pressing security challenges in several parts of Nigeria.

Governor Okpebholo’s remarks highlight concerns that criminal groups may be receiving support from insiders who provide information, logistics, and local knowledge needed to carry out attacks.

Security experts have repeatedly warned that tackling kidnapping requires not only confronting armed gangs but also dismantling the networks of informants and collaborators that enable such crimes.

What Residents Should Watch

The Edo State Government says security agencies remain on high alert and are working to prevent criminal groups from establishing strongholds within the state.

Residents have also been urged to report suspicious activities and cooperate with law enforcement authorities as efforts continue to improve security across Edo.
