The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Logistics and Supply, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, has commenced a strategic security assessment of Nigeria’s South-East region, beginning with a series of high-level engagements in Enugu State.
The visit forms part of a broader initiative by the Inspector-General of Police, Tunde Disu, aimed at strengthening security oversight and improving collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local stakeholders across the country’s six geopolitical zones.
Stakeholder Engagement Takes Centre Stage
During meetings with community leaders, institutions and security stakeholders in Enugu, DIG Onwuemelie emphasized the need for collective action in addressing the security challenges confronting the South-East.
According to him, effective policing requires stronger cooperation between communities, government institutions and security agencies to identify threats early and respond more efficiently.
The consultations are expected to provide firsthand insights into local security concerns and help shape strategies tailored to the realities of the region.

Speaking with journalists after the engagement, the senior police officer identified kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, murder and violent agitation as some of the major threats facing the South-East.
He expressed optimism that ongoing consultations would contribute to a more coordinated security framework capable of addressing both existing and emerging threats.
Police Dismiss Claims of Recruitment Challenges
Onwuemelie also dismissed reports suggesting that young people in the South-East are increasingly reluctant to join the Nigeria Police Force.
He described such claims as unverified, maintaining that conclusions should be based on credible data rather than speculation.
