Abuja, Nigeria – Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has criticized former military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida’s upcoming book, A Journey in Service, calling its narrative “totally false.”

Sowore, in a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, alleged that the book was an attempt to whitewash Babangida’s role in Nigeria’s history, particularly regarding the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. He claimed Babangida was shifting blame onto late General Sani Abacha, whom he also described as a “wicked dictator.”

“Today, former Nigerian dictator Ibrahim Babangida will launch his book, which is expected to falsely blame late General Sanni Abacha for the annulment of the June 12 elections. By doing so, he will be admitting that the elections were free and fair,” Sowore wrote.

He went further to accuse Babangida of numerous crimes, including the assassination of journalist Dele Giwa through a parcel bomb in 1986, the execution of military officers under the guise of coup plots, and large-scale corruption that, according to him, severely damaged Nigeria’s economy.

“Babangida’s narrative will be totally false, as his life and times have always been! He murdered several military officers and bosom friends in phantom coup d’états, crashed a plane filled with military officers, stole billions from the Nigerian national treasury, and introduced a fake transition program that he personally aborted in 1993. As usual, he will blame someone else for all these,” Sowore stated.

The book launch is expected to take place later today, with many anticipating its contents and the reactions it may provoke. Babangida, who ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, remains one of the country’s most controversial leaders, with his administration marked by economic restructuring and political upheavals.
