For two decades, Forbes-listed billionaires like Aliko Dangote, Mike Adenuga, Femi Otedola, and Abdulsamad Rabiu were the crown jewels of the ThisDay Awards, their presence adding prestige and allure. But this year, their conspicuous absence was impossible to ignore—a silent but powerful rebuke of Nduka Obaigbena.

Insiders say the business moguls deliberately boycotted the event, refusing to validate Obaigbena’s touted influence, which is reportedly propped up by deception and financial recklessness.

The 2025 ThisDay Awards in Lagos lost its usual glamour and substance as Nigeria’s top industrialists boycotted the event. Their absence first time in 20 years was deemed a calculated snub to Obaigbena and an indication of his dwindling influence.

While these industry giants staged a quiet revolt, the few who showed up—Segun Agbaje of GTCO, Jim Ovia of Zenith Bank, and Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, former CEO of Access Bank—did so out of fear.

Sources allege that these men, bound by past dealings, feared the repercussions of Obaigbena wielding damaging secrets against them.

With even political figures like Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun staying away, the event’s boycott underscores a growing demand for accountability.

At the heart of Obaigbena’s demystification is his alleged mismanagement of a $230 million First Bank loan, which he reportedly squandered on luxury junkets, the failed presidential ambition of Godwin Emefiele, and other vanities.

More shameful was Obaigbena’s inability to give plaques to his awardees; he only presented them ordinary paper on stage due to the Mareva restriction placed on his account over his scandalous debt to First Bank, according to ThisDay sources.

Aside from his sudden bankruptcy, the moguls’ collective absence at his event ultimately speak louder than words, signaling that his days of unchecked influence may be numbered.
