Tragedy in Lagos: 19-Year-Old UTME Candidate Who Took Her Own Life Received Admission 30 Minutes After Death

A heartbreaking tragedy has struck as Opesusi Faith Timilehin, a 19-year-old Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidate, reportedly received news of her university admission just 30 minutes after committing suicide.

Faith, who had applied to study Microbiology, had expressed deep distress over her 2025 UTME score of 190, which was lower than her previous year’s performance. Family sources said she had been increasingly withdrawn and disheartened, feeling she had once again failed to secure admission.

Unbeknownst to her, the admission letter confirming her acceptance into her chosen program arrived shortly after she tragically ended her life.

She felt she had no future. We kept encouraging her, but she thought 190 was the end,” a family member told reporters. “We didn’t even know admission had been granted until it was too late.”

Mental health advocates and education stakeholders have since called for greater support systems for students facing academic pressure.

This devastating incident underscores the urgent need for mental health awareness, especially among young Nigerians navigating the high-stakes education system.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please seek help. You are not alone.
