President Bola Tinubu has ordered a full reform of Nigerian football after years of missed tournaments and weak results from the national teams.
The president instructed the National Sports Commission to work with the Nigeria Football Federation and other stakeholders to fix governance, administration, youth development, domestic leagues, and accountability.
President Tinubu said football gets more public support and attention than any other sport in the country, yet it keeps falling short because of structural problems. He said Nigeria has the talent and resources, but the institutions behind the game have not been strong enough.
Authorities were also told to engage FIFA and CAF as part of the process, while staying within international football rules. The NSC chairman is to work with the NFF secretariat so day-to-day football administration continues during the transition.
The president asked football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the change and help build a more accountable system.
The order came on the same day NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and members of his board resigned, following the Super Eagles’ failure to reach the 2026 World Cup and other recent setbacks.
