The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has commenced nationwide training for its counsellors to standardise rehabilitation practices and strengthen clinical competencies in line with global best practices.
The phase one training, held at the NDLEA Academy in Jos, Plateau State, is coordinated by the Directorate of Counselling, Treatment and Rehabilitation (DCTR) and has over 100 counsellors from NDLEA formations across the country in attendance.
Speaking at the opening of the exercise, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), represented by the Director, DCTR, ACGN Bashir Ibrahim, said the programme would equip counsellors with modern therapeutic tools to address the evolving challenges of substance use disorders.
Marwa said the training would harmonise rehabilitation protocols, improve clinical responses to emerging psychoactive substances and co-occurring mental health conditions, strengthen ethics and confidentiality, and enhance data management and quality assurance.
He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based treatment, stressing that improved capacity among counsellors would translate to better outcomes for clients across NDLEA rehabilitation facilities.
The NDLEA Chairman also assured that the Agency would continue to invest in personnel development as part of its broader strategy to tackle both drug supply and demand reduction in Nigeria.
