The announcement was made in a public notice issued in Abuja on May 18, 2026. According to the notice, the initiative is in line with Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandates every taxable person in the country to obtain a Tax ID.

The agencies stated that the new Tax ID system would serve as a single, unified identity for taxpayers nationwide, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels.  The system is also expected to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and improve the management of tax-related information.

Highlighting the benefits of the initiative, the NRS and JRB noted that the Tax ID would simplify tax registration, filing, and payment processes while improving transparency and accountability within the tax system.

The agencies added that the initiative would also help reduce tax leakages and harmonize taxpayer data across all tiers of government. As part of the transition, all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and organizations currently using the TIN Validation API have been informed that the new Tax ID system will replace the existing TIN Validation API.
