FIFA World Cups: Morocco Ranks Africa’s Highest Earner With $31.5m

Morocco have become Africa’s highest-earning national team across the last two FIFA World Cups, after collecting a combined $58m in prize money from their historic 2022 and 2026 campaigns, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Atlas Lions earned $31.5m for reaching the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding to the $26.5m they received after their fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 2026 sum comprised a $10m base participation fee, a $2.5m preparation grant, and $19m in performance prize money for advancing to the last eight.

The achievement reflects Morocco’s consistency on the world stage, having become the first African and Arab nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022, before following it up with another impressive run in 2026.

Morocco’s campaign this year ended with a 2-0 defeat to France in the quarter-final on Thursday, with Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele on target as Les Bleus eliminated the Atlas Lions by the same scoreline that ended their run in the semi-final in Qatar four years earlier.

France, who advanced to the semi-finals for a third consecutive World Cup, will face Spain in the last-four.

Among other African teams at the 2026 tournament, Egypt finished second in earnings, collecting $17.5m after reaching the Round of 16, while Senegal, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Ghana each received $13.5m for their participation.
