Health experts have cautioned that low sperm count in men is often linked to everyday lifestyle choices rather than chance, warning that seemingly minor habits can gradually affect fertility.
According to specialists in Reproductive Health, factors such as heat exposure, smoking, poor diet, and stress play a significant role in reducing sperm quality, count, and movement over time.
Key Risk Factors Identified
Medical professionals note that excessive heat around the testicles can impair sperm production.
Common habits such as placing laptops on the lap, wearing tight underwear, and sitting for prolonged periods may increase temperature in the groin area, negatively affecting sperm development.
1. Smoking And Excessive Alcohol
consumption have also been highlighted as major contributors. Experts say tobacco introduces harmful toxins that damage sperm DNA, reduce count, and affect motility, while heavy alcohol use may lower testosterone levels. Even exposure to second-hand smoke can have adverse effects.
2. Obesity Is Another Critical Factor.
Excess body fat can disrupt hormonal balance by increasing estrogen levels in men, leading to reduced testosterone and lower sperm production.
1. Sleep deprivation has also been linked to declining fertility. Specialists explain that the body regulates hormones during sleep, and insufficient rest may result in reduced testosterone levels, affecting sperm production.
2. Dietary habits further influence reproductive health. Diets high in processed foods, trans fats, and sugar are associated with oxidative stress, which can damage sperm cells and reduce their ability to fertilise.
3. Lack of physical activity may worsen the situation by contributing to weight gain and hormonal imbalance. However, experts caution that excessive intense exercise may also negatively impact sperm quality, stressing the need for moderation.
4. Chronic stress is another contributing factor, as elevated cortisol levels can suppress testosterone production over time, affecting both sperm output and libido.
5. Untreated infections, particularly sexually transmitted infections, may also silently damage the reproductive system if not addressed early.
3. Preventive measures
Health professionals advise that simple lifestyle adjustments can significantly improve fertility outcomes.
These include wearing loose-fitting underwear, getting adequate sleep of seven to eight hours, maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, engaging in moderate exercise, and reducing alcohol intake while avoiding smoking.
They also recommend minimising prolonged heat exposure to the groin area as part of daily habits.
Experts emphasise that while some fertility challenges may require medical intervention, many cases can be improved through consistent lifestyle changes, underscoring the importance of awareness and early action.
