NADCEL 2026: President Tinubu Hails Nigerian Army as Strategic Force in National, Regional and Global Security

President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has praised the Nigerian Army as a formidable institution whose legacy of courage, professionalism and sacrifice continues to promote peace, stability and security within Nigeria, across Africa and globally.

The President, represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, made the remarks on Monday during the Grand Finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He described the Nigerian Army as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s security architecture and a respected contributor to regional and international peace support operations. According to him, the Army has consistently demonstrated resilience, discipline and operational excellence in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and promoting peace across Africa and beyond.

President Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Army through sustained modernisation, improved troop welfare and the acquisition of advanced military capabilities. He also commended the successful hosting of the African Land Forces Forum, describing it as a platform for deepening military cooperation and addressing emerging security challenges.

Speaking on the theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” the President said it reflects the enduring bond between the Army and the Nigerian people. He paid tribute to fallen heroes and assured their families of continued government support while applauding ongoing efforts in indigenous defence production, intelligence sharing and the adoption of Artificial Intelligence to improve operational effectiveness.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara commended the Nigerian Army for maintaining peace and security in the state and the Niger Delta. He praised its role in protecting critical national assets and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continued collaboration with 6 Division.

Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the Army’s mission extends beyond battlefield victories to sustaining peace, defending national interests and securing the nation’s future. He reiterated the Army’s commitment to modernisation through improved capabilities, equipment renewal, infrastructure development and the deployment of advanced operational platforms.

The COAS added that tackling contemporary security challenges requires stronger collaboration among the military, government institutions, international partners and citizens.

The grand finale featured a military parade, tactical demonstrations, equipment displays, the presentation of the COAS Commendation Awards to outstanding personnel and a Research and Development Exhibition showcasing the Nigerian Army’s strides in indigenous innovation and technological advancement.

The ceremony was attended by former Heads of State, including General Yakubu Gowon and General Olusegun Obasanjo, Chiefs of Army Staff from 17 African countries, the Special Adviser to the President of Liberia, members of the National and State Houses of Assembly, as well as former Chiefs of Defence Staff and former Chiefs of Army Staff.
