A 43-year-old Detective Sergeant has been arrested by the Free State Police Anti-Corruption Unit on charges of corruption and extortion following a successful undercover entrapment operation.
The arrest took place on Friday, 10 July 2026, behind Sasolburg Police Station after investigators allegedly caught the officer accepting marked money from a complainant.
Police said the case began on Sunday, 5 July 2026, when the detective visited the home of a 41-year-old complainant in Zamdela but did not find him.
The officer returned on Monday, informing the complainant that an assault case had been opened against him.
Instead of following legal procedures, the detective allegedly claimed there was “no case” and suggested they could “work something out” to avoid an arrest, leading to the complainant transferring R2,000 via EFT.
The alleged extortion escalated on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, when the detective reportedly returned and claimed a prosecutor wanted an additional R10,000 to have the charges dropped. After the matter was reported to the Free State Anti-Corruption Unit, a formal entrapment operation was authorised.
The detective allegedly met the complainant to collect the money on Friday before being arrested, with the marked entrapment money recovered in his possession.
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia condemned the detective’s alleged actions, saying the South African Police Service has zero tolerance for corruption within its ranks.
He praised the Anti-Corruption Unit for its swift action and reaffirmed the commitment to restoring public trust.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 July 2026, on charges of corruption and extortion.
