In Nigeria, Sheikh Gumi Fires Back At Calls To Kill Repentant Insurgents

A country can spend days arguing over what to do with people who once carried weapons, only to discover that everyone suddenly becomes an expert in justice the moment the debate reaches social media.

That familiar contest of outrage has taken another turn after Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi criticised calls for the killing of repentant insurgents and secessionists, insisting that such actions violate both religious teachings and international law.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Gumi reacted days after the Nigerian Senate urged the Federal Government to end the rehabilitation programme for repentant terrorists and instead prosecute anyone found guilty of terrorism and other related offences.

According to him, executing repentant insurgents, secessionists or prisoners of war is morally wrong and stands against Islamic principles as well as internationally accepted legal standards.

He also warned that the International Criminal Court is watching such developments and urged those involved to think about both legal and spiritual consequences.
