A video circulating on social media has sparked controversy after an Islamic cleric was heard making remarks advocating violence and enslavement against non-Muslims, whom he referred to as kafir.
The video was shared by The Yoruba Times on X, with the platform describing the speaker as a Yoruba Islamic cleric and alleging that he was calling for war against non-Muslims in Yorubaland.
In the circulating recording, the cleric is heard making claims that Muslims have a religious basis for fighting and enslaving non-Muslims, while attributing the position to the Quran.
The remarks have generated concern because of their apparent advocacy of violence and hostility against people on the basis of religious belief.
However, LeadNaija has not independently established the identity of the speaker, the location and date of the recording, or the circumstances in which the remarks were made. The video should therefore be treated as a circulating claim pending further verification.
The comments should also not be interpreted as representing the views of Muslims generally. Islam is practised by millions of people with diverse theological and social perspectives, and the statements of an individual cleric should not automatically be attributed to an entire religious community.
LeadNaija will continue to monitor the development and provide updates if the speaker is identified or credible information emerges concerning the origin and full context of the video.
