AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has accused officers of the Nigeria Police Force deployed for the Osun State governorship election of attacking his team while they were travelling to Osogbo.
Sowore made the allegation in a post on his verified X account on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, claiming that the incident occurred while he and his team were making their way into Osogbo ahead of the election.
According to Sowore, his group had a peaceful and respectful interaction with the police officers before allegedly being subjected to tear gas.
He claimed that the officers “secretly fired tear gas” at the group as they continued their journey.
Sowore Accuses Police of Intimidation
The AAC candidate described the alleged incident as an attempt at intimidation, but said it did not prevent his team from continuing their journey to Osogbo.
Sowore said they eventually arrived in the Osun State capital, describing their arrival as a victory despite what he characterised as efforts to intimidate them.
He questioned the conduct of police officers assigned to monitor the election, arguing that the Nigeria Police Force should be focused on protecting citizens and safeguarding the democratic process.
“The police should be protecting citizens and safeguarding the democratic process, not attacking peaceful political actors,” Sowore wrote.
He also criticised the Nigeria Police Force over the alleged incident, accusing the officers involved of targeting his group despite what he described as a peaceful interaction.
Sowore Calls Out Nigeria Police Force
The allegation comes as security agencies increase deployments across Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The Nigeria Police Force has been involved in preparations to provide security during the poll, with authorities repeatedly stressing the need for a peaceful electoral process.
However, Sowore’s allegation raises questions about the treatment of political actors and campaign teams during the final stages of the election campaign.
