IPOB Indefinitely Suspend Nnamdi Kanu as Leader as It Re-organises Leadership Structure

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has suspended the offices of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and the Director of Radio Biafra following a leadership restructuring.

The decision was reached during a full Directorate meeting on Wednesday, where the group reviewed intelligence reports allegedly linked to communications from Kanu while in Sokoto prison. This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, Head of IPOB’s Directorate of State.

IPOB said a Directorate of State will now manage its affairs, stressing that the movement was founded by Biafrans in the diaspora and not a single individual, and that no one person can dissolve its highest structure.

The group said the action was taken due to concerns that “unguarded communications from Sokoto prison” had contributed to arrests and deaths of its members.

It also raised concerns over alleged plans by some individuals to form a militia that could worsen vi%lence in the region, noting that DSS monitors Kanu’s communications and visitors.

According to IPOB, the suspension is meant to prevent “reckless assumption of authority and unguarded utterances” that could lead to further arrests, torture, or deaths of Biafran youths.

It added that any criminal actions carried out under the suspended offices would no longer be linked to IPOB, stressing it would not be held responsible for activities of unauthorised individuals or groups.

The development follows reports that Kanu had dissolved the 3rd Directorate of State and set up a 4th administration, appointing US-based Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ as the new head to oversee operations under his directive.
