The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has announced that the Federal Government will review the ₦70,000 national minimum wage to ensure it reflects the country’s current economic realities.

Speaking on Thursday at the Good Governance Summit 2026 organised by Working People United (WoPU) in Abuja, Gbajabiamila said the Tinubu administration recognises the increasing cost of living and remains committed to ensuring workers receive fair wages.

He recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the ₦70,000 minimum wage into law in July 2024, more than doubling the previous ₦30,000 benchmark. He also noted that the President shortened the wage review cycle from five years to three years to allow salaries to keep pace with economic changes.

According to him, although the ₦70,000 wage represented a major achievement when it was introduced, it must now be reassessed in light of present-day economic conditions. He assured workers that the government would approach the review process in partnership with organised labour rather than as an opponent.

Gbajabiamila also urged labour unions to continue engaging constructively with the government, saying collaboration would produce better outcomes for workers while supporting national economic growth.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, said the success of any government should be measured by how its policies improve the lives of workers. He stressed that governance should deliver meaningful benefits, including better living standards, decent jobs, stronger social protection, increased productivity and broader economic opportunities.
