President Cyril Ramaphosa has indicated that he is prepared to consider extending the Madlanga Commission’s deadline if commissioners determine they need more time to complete their work.
Speaking to journalists on Monday during the Chris Hani Regional Volunteers Launch at Qamata Great Place in Cofimvaba, he praised the commission’s progress despite ongoing challenges.
Ramaphosa said he was pleased with the work being carried out by the commission and would consider any request for additional time if it became necessary.
The commission is currently expected to conclude public hearings by July 31, while its overall mandate has already been extended, with the final report due by August 31.
The inquiry has faced several setbacks, including logistical challenges, health-related disruptions and the absence of key witnesses. Alleged cartel boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s subpoenaed testimony was postponed amid ongoing plea negotiations with the National Prosecuting Authority, while Deputy Crime Intelligence head Maj-Gen Feroz Khan remains unavailable after being hospitalised following a shooting in Johannesburg last month.
North West businessman Suliman Carrim has also missed two scheduled appearances before the commission.
The growing delays have raised questions about whether the commission can complete its work within the current timeframe or whether a further extension will be required.
Ramaphosa said he would listen to such a request if it is made, as the commission continues with its investigation into allegations of corruption within the criminal justice system.
