Tinubu Approves Nigerian Army Expansion as New GOCs Take Charge of Four Newly Created Divisions

The Nigerian Army has appointed new General Officers Commanding (GOCs) to lead four newly created divisions following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval to expand the force from eight to twelve divisions in a move aimed at strengthening national security and improving military operations across the country.

The appointments mark the commencement of operations in the new formations, which are expected to enhance command efficiency, troop deployment and rapid response to emerging security threats.

Major General Yakubu Yahaya has been appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 9 Division in Ilorin and will also serve as Commander of Operation SAVANNA SHIELD. Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife has been named GOC of the 10 Division, Jalingo, while Major General Moses Gara takes over as GOC of the 5 Division, Makurdi, alongside his appointment as Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE. Major General Auwalu Mahmuda has been appointed GOC of the 2 Division, Ibadan.

The Army also activated three new brigades as part of the restructuring. Brigadier General A.O. Odubiyi will command the 11 Brigade, Gboko; Brigadier General A.M. Haruna has been appointed Commander of the 29 Brigade, Kainji; while Brigadier General R.M. Aminu will lead the 10 Brigade, Lafia.

The newly established 5, 9, 10 and 83 Divisions were approved by President Tinubu as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the Nigerian Army’s operational capacity and improve its ability to tackle insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges across the country.

The expansion is expected to reinforce military presence in strategic locations, improve operational coordination and enhance the Armed Forces’ effectiveness in safeguarding lives, communities and critical national assets.
