Ghana Police Arrest Nigerian Augustine Maazi, Foil Planned Bank Robbery in Accra

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a Nigerian national, identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi, after foiling an alleged robbery plot targeting three banks in the Labone area of Accra.

Two other suspected members of the robbery syndicate were killed during a shootout with police, while another suspect reportedly escaped and remains at large.

According to the Ghana Police Service, officers received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, that a gang was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located in the Labone area.

Police Intercept Suspected Robbery Gang
Following the intelligence, a police response team was deployed to Labone, where officers reportedly spotted members of the suspected gang in vehicles parked close to the banks.

The police said one of the vehicles sped away after the occupants noticed the officers.

Officers reportedly gave chase and arrested Augustine Okechuku Maazi, while another occupant of the vehicle managed to escape.

The occupants of a second vehicle also allegedly attempted to flee while firing at the police.

The police said officers engaged the suspects in a shootout, resulting in the deaths of two suspected robbers.

Vehicles, Pistol Recovered
The Ghana Police Service said two vehicles were recovered during the operation.

They were identified as a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS-7915-17.

A pistol was also reportedly recovered from the scene.

The two suspects who died during the confrontation were taken to a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.

Meanwhile, Maazi remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with inquiries into the alleged robbery plot and the activities of the suspected syndicate.

Police Launch Manhunt for Escaped Suspect

The Ghana Police Service is expected to continue investigations into the alleged robbery plot and establish the identities and roles of the suspects involved.

The police also urged members of the public to continue providing credible information that could assist authorities in preventing criminal activities.

The operation has been described by the Ghana Police Service as an intelligence-led intervention that prevented the suspected gang from carrying out the planned attacks.
