More than 70 suspects, including seven women, were arrested during an intelligence-driven Operation Prosper conducted at Bundu Inn in Mohlakeng, West Rand District in Gauteng on Friday.

The multidisciplinary operation was carried out by the Gauteng Police in partnership with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and related criminal activities in the area.

During the operation, law enforcement officers impounded two motor vehicles, seized more than 20 generators, and confiscated over 100 bags of gold-bearing material believed to be linked to illegal mining activities.

Police said the operation was still underway at the time of the announcement, with the possibility that the number of arrests and recovered items could increase as searches and investigations continue.

Authorities have indicated that Operation Prosper forms part of broader initiatives aimed at disrupting illegal mining networks and enhancing public safety across Gauteng.

The arrested suspects are expected to face charges related to illegal mining and other offences, subject to the outcome of ongoing investigations and court proceedings.
